Gentoo Linux 2008 VMware image x86_64
I just made this image as a base for myself, but I want to share them as well. Fell free to download them, and use them as you want. By downloading, you agree that the use is at your own risk, and I am not responsible for any mistakes and damages.
The kernel is 64-bit Linux 2.6.24 Gentoo patch 8 with SMP enabled. The image has been made on VmWare Fusion 2.0 beta2, and contains its VmWare Tools. Almost nothing has been installed - just the basic stuff like sshd, mc, so the rest is up to you.
Memory allocated: 532MB
CPUs used: 2
Virtual machine files size: 4.21GB
Disk: 10GB mounted as /
Compressed size: 765MB in 5 files
So now the important stuff - how to get into:
user: root
password: password
The files are split up to 5 parts, and you can download them from rapidshare:
part 1 (190 MB)
part 2 (190 MB)
part 3 (190 MB)
part 4 (190 MB)
part 5 (2.5 MB)
You can decompress files using RAR which can be downloaded at www.rarlabs.com. Decompress command would be (in the directory of the download, extracts files into separate directory):
unrar x gentoo-2008-x86_64.part01.rar

how do i install this? can i do it without the GUI?

Download it, unpack it, run VMware, open the image in VMware, and then it should start under VMware without problems.
There is compiled just a command line user interface, no X-Windows. You should install X-Windows/KDE/GNOME by yourself. It’s not hard, just takes a little of time.

Your Gentoo Linux 2008 VMware image x86_64 is just the kind of starting point I was looking for.
I have no problem using a server for download that is slow because I do not subscribe. That is reasonable. Only one download running at a time is also reasonable. Both are easely managed using a script file, the wget command, and going to bed.
RapidShare forces me to sit and wait for each download to finish and then manually start the next one. It is not even being done in the name of advertising. The only add is for their service and I have already decided not to subscribe. Do you think being a PAIN will change my mind? Find a different server.
The REQUIRED time at the computer downloading does give me a chance to look for another VM that is available on a reasonable server.
Good night

I have changed my mind. It is TOO much of a PAIN. If this same approach was used building the VM, it is not worth it.
Once again, good night

I changed the download type to some kind of traffic share. It should allow you to download the files without any limitations. Hope it helps.

And anyway, installing Gentoo base system is sometimes quite a pain, so that’s why I did it. Later, things are much smoother, and easier…

I was excited and grateful that someone took the time to do this but that was quickly changed to anger and frustration once my download manager didn’t work and I found out I was being forced to use RapidShare (wow!bad service!)

thanks for archive. that’s the only 64-bit linux preinstalled i’ve found on vmware site
nevertheless, a bit of critique: in 7zip format it is as small as 597 mb (7z format is decompressible by winzip/rar/pa too). why you not sharted it using emule, torrent and other p2p networks?
i also prefer to use ubunti or some other more user-friendlier distro but it’s probably out of your goals

Bulat, thanks for a tip with the 7zip format. I will reupload and update the distro tomorrow (or when I download the files).
